LC-MS/MS for Faster and More Accurate Laboratory Test Results

To give a more satisfactory clinical laboratory test result, researchers tirelessly attempt to discover the newest and more sophisticated analytical method. For that reason, Prodia provides Liquid Chromatography Tandem-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), which does not only benefit customers but also doctors who are conducting researches. A biomarker consisting of various applications and compounds can be quantified with high sensitivity and specificity. Various samples can be utilized as the source for the target compound.

LC-MS/MS examination only needs a small amount of specimen for a number of examinations. Therefore, it will minimize the sampling performed to the patients, especially to babies and children. Initially, the specimen could only be examined in medical care facilities overseas. Today, it can be examined in Prodia within relatively a short period of time.

The newest analytical method

LC-MS/MS is one of the analytics methods which combines the separation capabilities of the liquid chromatography/LC on a target compound of a complex mixture (such as human blood sample), by using the ability of mass spectroscopy/MS. This analytical method is able to read the mass spectrum of the separated target compound. This analysis can be performed to both polar and non-polar compounds, with the mass ranging from 50 to 2000 g/mol.

LC-MS/MS is useful to develop a variety of new examinations that require a high sensitivity and specificity. It can also analyze more than one compound target using only a small amount of specimen simultaneously (multiplex analysis). LC-MS/MS has the ability to detect target analytes, even the smallest amount of analyte within the blood. It can detect the analyte up to the picomolar level.

LC-MS/MS working process

Simply put, prior to the LC-MS/MS working process, there must be a specimen preparation. The specimen must be cleaned from impurities. Further, the specimen is injected into the chromatography system to separate the target compound based on its polarity. The separation within the chromatography will form streams of compound which later will flow into the Mass Spectroscopy system (MS). The mass spectrum of each compound will be analyzed by MS1.

The analyzed compounds will be mixed with nitrogen, forming specific fragments to be analyzed further by MS2. Mass transition from MS1 to MS2 for each compound has different patterns, depending on the chemical structure of the compound.

Currently in Indonesia, Prodia is the only private clinical laboratory which provides LC-MS/MS. However, this analysis has been generally used for environmental and food analysis. In developing the LC-MS/MS system, Prodia is affiliated to clinical laboratories and hospitals overseas where the method has already been applied.
