"Prediabetes is a condition in which the level of glucose, or blood sugar, is above normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. It is when a blood sugar level test after 8-10 hours of fasting results in 100-125 mg/dL, or when the blood sugar level 2 hours after 75 gram glucose fasting ranges between 140 and 199 mg/dL. If reaching 200 mg/dL, it will be diagnosed as diabetes." said Dr. Nanny NM Soetedji, SpPD-KEMD.
In the prediabetes condition, the body becomes resistant to insulin and unable to "cleanse" or take sugar from the bloodstream as it is supposed to. As the result, the blood sugar levels become higher than the normal range, and if this condition is prolonged, it can develop into type 2 diabetes as well as heart disease and stroke.
While diabetes gives only a small chance of recovery, prediabetes has a bigger window for it. Prediabetes is not a disease. It is a disorder, and therefore shows no suspicious symptoms. Prediabetes is a warning sign. Thus, the discussion revolves around its risk factors instead of symptoms.
Type 2 diabetes is not a disease happening in an instant, it needs a long time before it finally can cripple the function of insulin. One of the preliminary signs of diabetes is prediabetes.
In prediabetes condition, the symptoms of diabetes starts showing themselves. People with prediabetes get sleepy easily, are prone to fatigue and hard to concentrate, experience excessive hunger and urinate often. However, such condition can be prevented by changing lifestyle: do exercises regularly and consume a diet which is full of nutrition and well-balanced, including consuming vegetables and fruits.
Triggered by bad lifestyle
Unhealthy lifestyle causes prediabetes and various serious illnesses of the non-transmittable disease group, such as heart disorder, stroke, hypertension and diabetes. The ingredients of an unhealthy lifestyle, among others, are: lack of activities (exercise), high consumption of fatty food (junk food) and high frequency of stress.
Unwittingly, such habit can disrupt the balance of body metabolism and causes sugar accumulation to be stored as fat. As a result, the individual will suffer from obesity that can invite other diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to realize that all symptoms need to be handled as early as possible.
Prediabetes condition can be observed through body weight that is excessive and deviates from the body mass index (BMI). Excessive body weight is widely known as overweight and obesity. Overweight happens when the BMI value ranges from 25 to 26.9, whereas obesity happens when the value is more than 27 (normal BMI ranges from 18.5-24.9). Apart from that, obesity can be measured from waist circumference. For women the ideal waist circumference is 81.25 cm, while for men the ideal number is 87.5 cm.
