Prodia Starts "Prodia In U" Campaign to Support Environmental Conservation Efforts

JAKARTA, 29 April 2019 – Waste is currently not only a national problem, but also has become an international concern. This has resulted in the establishment of Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) movement in September 2000 by 189 state leaders. The MDGs movement was continued with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September 2015 as a result of the UN General Assembly's Open Working Group (OWG) which produces 17 world targets issued in 2015 until 2030.

These waste problems are strongly related to the population growth, economic growth, and the changes of people consumption habits. According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) and the Ministry of Industry data in 2016, the total amount of waste in Indonesia was 65.2 million tons per year. KLHK data also stated that the total amount of waste in Indonesia in 2019 has reached 68 million tons, in which the amount of plastic waste has reached 9.52 million tons or 14 percent of the total waste. According to Jambeck's data (2015), Indonesia ranked second on the list of the world's top producers of plastic waste clogging up global sea lanes with 187.2 million tons of plastic trash, after China with 262.9 million tons.

These wastes have very negative effects on the environment and health, so the strategic acts are needed to overcome the problems. As these strategic acts are in accordance with the SDGs targets, in 2030 all countries must substantially reduce waste production through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse, in order to ensure a sustainable pattern of production and consumption.

All parties including government, private sectors, and the community also have their own roles to tackle the waste problem to preserve the environment. Supporting the environmental preservation, PT Prodia Widyahusada Tbk (ticker symbol: PRDA) launches the Prodia In U campaign for all Prodia's members, started from Prodia Tower area at Jl. Kramat Raya 150, Jakarta.

The Prodia In U is a campaign to reduce plastic use in Prodia Tower area with a tagline Use Container, Use Tumbler, Use Reusable Straw, and Use Reusable Bag. The purpose of the Prodia In U campaign is to support environmental preservation efforts by reducing plastic use and building the awareness of people to use eco friendly products in Prodia Tower and its surroundings. Plastic as a non-biodegradable material has contributed significantly to the environmental pollution.

Managing Director of Prodia Dewi Muliaty said that Prodia was committed to taking part in world environmental conservation efforts. "The Prodia In U campaign is an initiative to encourage all individuals of Prodia in environmental conservation through reducing plastic use. It can be done with simple acts such as not using plastic bags, plastic water bottles, and plastic bags for shopping. We hope this campaign can build awareness for each individual to consistently care about the environment,"  said Dewi at the Kick Off of the Prodia In U campaign at Prodia Tower, Jakarta (29/4).

The Prodia in U campaign will be conducted and continued in Prodia's regional offices and branches throughout Indonesia during 2019 for all individuals of Prodia. The activities will consist of providing organic and non-organic garbage bins in the work area, neat and clean workspace photo competition, garbage collection programs around the office environment, etc.

Plastic waste or other objects containing plastic can be a threat to the earth sustainability. Without any recycling processes, the plastic waste will need 200-400 years to decompose. Whereas if such plastic is burned, it will result in a very high level of toxic chemicals emitted into the air, which is dangerous if inhaled. The smoke from burning plastic material can increase the risk of respiratory infections and lung cancer.

The Prodia In U campaign regarding the reduction of plastic use is an effort carried out by Prodia not only for the sake of environment but also for health.
